Dry Eyes Q & A

What causes dry eyes?

Dry eyes can happen when you don’t have enough high-quality tears, or enough tears in general, to keep your eyes nourished and lubricated. A number of things can lead to inadequate tear production. Among the most common causes are:

  • Certain medications
  • Some medical conditions
  • Blepharitis (eyelid inflammation)
  • Exposure to smoke, wind, or dry air
  • Prolonged staring at a computer screen
  • Refractive eye surgery
  • Prolonged use of contact lenses
  • Hormonal changes
  • Oral contraceptives
  • Pregnancy
  • Menopause
  • Age

Medications that may cause dry eyes include antidepressants, blood pressure medicines, antihistamines, and decongestants. Medical problems often associated with dry eyes include rheumatoid arthritis, thyroid disease, and diabetes.

How does my eye doctor diagnose dry eyes?

To determine if you have dry eye syndrome, your eye doctor asks you a number of questions, including those related to your health history, symptoms, and the details of your environment. For example, they might discuss whether you’re exposed to smoke or excessive screen time.

Your provider also examines your eyes. They inspect your blink dynamics and lid structure, use a bright light and magnification to study your corneas and eyelids, and measure your tears for quantity, quality, the presence of abnormalities, and tear flow.

Afterward, your provider has a good idea of whether you suffer from dry eyes. If so, they discuss treatment options with you to find one that best matches your needs and preferences.

What are my dry eyes treatment options?

Your personalized dry eye treatment depends on the type and severity of your condition. Treatments range from using over-the-counter artificial tears to eyelid surgery.

Generally, your eye doctor chooses therapies and medications that conserve tears, add tears, increase tear production, or treat inflammation.

Examples of treatments that produce one or more of these results include:

  • Cyclosporine eye drops for cornea inflammation
  • Autologous blood serum drops
  • Tear-stimulating eye drops, pills, or gels
  • Eyelid massage
  • Light therapy
  • Oral medications
  • Eye inserts
